The overarching goal of Area 2 “Adaptive Manufacturing and Smart Factories” is to provide adaptive and standardized solutions that enable interoperability and flexibility for scalable production systems.

Adaptive production requires a fully networked, easily adaptable, scalable and highly automated store floor. To this end systems for

• Tool management
• Process awareness
• Measurement technology for predicting process quality

must be integrated. Scalability must be provided on a horizontal level to eliminate physical resource constraints. These can be found on the same hierarchical level of a production system and can be controlled and orchestrated by a management system above them.
