The overarching goal of Area 1 “Digital Engineering” is to develop a methodological framework and a corresponding software toolchain that enables the integrated application of digital methods in design.

In this respect, the findings and results of the first funding period will be further streamlined and extended to provide more holistic methods for design planning, that enable reasoning with computational methods from different domains. More specifically, Area 1 aims at:

  • Knowledge representations, that enable the integration and management of knowledge in a PLM context
  • computational methods that enable reasoning between the different phases of PLM
  • and the formalization of design tasks, enabling engineers to formalize the relevant knowledge required to apply a digital (computer) method themselves
