The overall objective of Area 1 is the development of a methodological framework and corresponding software toolchain that facilitate the integrated application of digital methods in engineering design.

In this respect, findings and results of FP 1 will be further streamlined and extended to yield more holistic methods for engineering design enabling reasoning with computational methods from different domains. More precisely, Area 1 aims at (1) knowledge representations that enable the integration and management of knowledge in a PLM context, (2) computational methods that render the reasoning among the different stage of PLM feasible, and, (3) design task formalisation to enable engineers to formalize the relevant knowledge required for the application of a digital (computational) method themselves.
